WEST GERMANY: VfR 06 Neuss (1919-1945, 1948-2013)

Stadion an der Hammer Landstrasse, Neuss = Nuys (formerly VfR 06 Neuss)

FR Germany, state: North Rhine-Westphalia

2 IX 2011 / VfR 06 Neuss - SC Kapellen-Erft II 0-3 / Bezirksliga North Rhine, Group 4 (= FRG level 8) (gravel side pitch)

6 XI 2011 / VfR 06 Neuss - 1. FC Grevenbroich-Süd 0-1 / Bezirksliga North Rhine, Group 4 (= FRG level 8)

Note 1: Verein für Rasensport 1906 (VfR 06) Neuss, obviously founded in 1906, moved to the ground at Hammer Landstrasse in 1919, with the wooden grandstand being inaugurated four years later. Due to heavy damage inflicted on the stadium in World War II, VfR Neuss played its football at Neuss' Jahnstadion for three seasons (1945-48) before returning to their home ground. In July 2013, forced by local authorities, the stadium had to be vacated by the club - with its demolition following in the immediate aftermath. VfR Neuss played at Bezirkssportanlage Weckhoven for five seasons (2013-18) before settling down at the Jahnstadion it had left behind exactly 70 years before. Meanwhile, at my visit in the summer of 2022, the location of the former Stadion an der Hammer Landstrasse turns out to have become a wilderness - the obvious question being why Neuss' town council were adamant to have the football club move away from the premises in the first place.

Note 2: Below, a compilation of photos of four different visits: pictures 1, 9-23 & 26 = match visit, November 2011 / pictures 2-8 & 24-25 = match visit (side pitch), September 2011 / picture 27 = non-matchday (location) visit, July 2022 / picture 28 = non-matchday (location) visit, May 2022.
