NETHERLANDS: vv Monnickendam

Sportpark Markgouw, Monnickendam (vv Monnickendam)

Netherlands, province: North Holland = Noord-Holland

14 IX 2024 / vv Monnickendam - SV Always Forward (zo) 3-5 / District West I, Regional Cup - group stage, group 1-3

Timeline
  • 1930 / Foundation of a football club in Monnickendam, which takes on the name MVV (Monnickendamsche Voetbalvereeniging). The club’s first ground is situated at Overlekergouw in the hamlet of Overleek, halfway between Monnickendam and Ilpendam.
  • 1933 / Probably because of the name MVV already having been taken by other clubs – and therefore not acceptable according to KNVB rules – MVV changes its name to become vv Monnickendam.
  • 1936 / Having started its life in the ranks of the so-called NHVB (Noord-Hollandsche Voetbalbond), the league association organising football below the level of KNVB (Sunday) League 4, vv Monnickendam now wins promotion to Sunday League 4 for the first time.
  • 1948 / vv Monnickendam finishes in joint first place in District West I’s Sunday League 4B with EVC (Edam), failing to win promotion subsequently – it is unclear if the club stumbled over EVC in the championship tie-break match or in the subsequent round of promotion play-offs with other League 4 title winners.
  • 1952 / vv Monnickendam absorbs a smaller club from the same village, Gouwzee Boys, which probably had been founded only four years previously, in 1948. Around that same time, vv Monnickendam must have changed grounds, abandoning Terrein Overlekergouw and settling at Terrein Marijkestraat in Monnickendam proper.
  • 1953 / Champions in District West I’s Sunday League 4B, 1 point ahead of runners-up RKAFC, vv Monnickendam fails to break down the door to League 3 in the subsequent round of promotion play-offs.
  • 1956 / Champions in District West I’s Sunday League 4B, 5 points ahead of closest followers RKEDO, vv Monnickendam fails to win promotion yet again in the subsequent round of promotion play-offs.
  • 1959 / Having come close to promotion to Sunday League 3 on several occasions in the previous decade, vv Monnickendam now finishes in eleventh and last place in District West I’s Sunday League 4B, thus dropping back into the ranks of the NHVB.
  • 1962 / After three years in the ranks of the NHVB, vv Monnickendam manages a return to Sunday League 4.
  • 1963 / vv Monnickendam finishes in joint first place in District West I’s Sunday League 4B, with an equal number of points as vv Kolping Boys. In the subsequent title tie-break encounter, however, vv Kolping Boys manages to clinch the title, thus depriving vv Monnickendam of promotion to Sunday League 3.
  • 1971 / Finding itself bottom of the table in District West I’s Sunday League 4B, vv Monnickendam descends back into the ranks of NHVB after nine years.
  • 1972 / Runners-up in NHVB Zondag Hoofdklasse, the top division of the NHVB league pyramid, vv Monnickendam manages a return to Sunday League 4 after just one season.
  • 1974 / Abandoning Terrein Marijkestraat, vv Monnickendam now moves into the newly laid-out Sportpark Markgouw, which it shares with other local sports clubs (athletics, tennis, handball, baseball) and where it has been home ever since.
  • 1975 / vv Monnickendam finishes as runners-up in District West I’s Sunday League 4D, 3 points behind champions WSV ’30.
  • 1976 / vv Monnickendam finishes as runners-up in District West I’s Sunday League 4D, 9 points behind champions SV DRC. In the two following years, the club finishes in third place in this same division.
  • 1981-82 / The wooden clubhouse at Sportpark Markgouw, constructed in 1974, is replaced by the stone construction which is still in place today.
  • 1984 / Finishing bottom of the table in District West I’s Sunday League 4D, vv Monnickendam drops back into NHVB Hoofdklasse after twelve seasons. In the following two decades, the club’s Sunday team finds itself in the ‘bubbling under’ of District West I’s league pyramid.
  • 1985 / vv Monnickendam's Saturday team wins promotion to District West I's Saturday League 4 for the first time. In the following decade, however, the focus within the club remains firmly on Sunday league football, with the Saturday team being withdrawn from the league pyramid several times and being re-established subsequently.
  • 2000 / Champions in District West I’s Saturday League 4A, 5 points ahead of closest followers VPV Purmersteijn, vv Monnickendam (za) wins promotion to Saturday League 3.
  • 2004 / Finishing as runners-up in District West I’s Sunday League 6C, 4 points behind champions vv Kwadijk, vv Monnickendam’s Sunday team accedes to Sunday League 5.
  • 2005 / Runaway champions in District West I’s Saturday League 3A, 13 points ahead of closest rivals CVV Blauw Wit (W), vv Monnickendam (za) wins promotion to Saturday League 2 for the first time. Meanwhile, finding itself bottom of the table in District West I’s Sunday League 5C, vv Monnickendam’s Sunday team drops back into League 6 along with the club finishing second from bottom, SV Beemster.
  • 2009 / Having spent the last four seasons in Sunday League 6, the lowest Sunday league level in District West I, vv Monnickendam’s first Sunday team is withdrawn; in spite of coming close on several occasions, vv Monnickendam (zo) never managed to win promotion to a level higher than League 4. Although Sunday football has continued to be played by recreational teams, the focus of the club has been on first team football on Saturday ever since.
  • 2011 / Finishing in third place in Saturday League 2A, vv Monnickendam qualifies for the promotion play-offs, in which the club is eliminated in R1 by FC Breukelen (7-0 aggr.).
  • 2013 / vv Monnickendam’s main pitch is equipped with a synthetic surface.
  • 2016 / Finishing in second-last place in Saturday League 2A, vv Monnickendam drops back into Saturday League 3 along with bottom club vv Reiger Boys. After the relegation, former professional league player Ab Persijn (1995-2003: FC Volendam, K Heusden-Zolder, Dordrecht ’90), who once started out as a youth player at vv Monnickendam, takes over the role as trainer of the club’s first team.
  • 2017 / Coached by Ab Persijn, vv Monnickendam finishes as runners-up in District West I’s Saturday League 3A, 8 points behind champions FC Castricum. As such, the club qualifies for the play-offs, in which it manages subsequent victories over vv Kagia (8-2 aggr.) and Hellas Sport Combinatie (6-0 aggr.), resulting in an immediate return to Saturday League 2.
  • 2019 / Champions in Saturday League 2A, 1 point ahead of runners-up vv ZOB, vv Monnickendam – still coached by Ab Persijn – wins promotion to Saturday League 1 for the first time in club history.
  • 2021 / After five years at the helm of the club, and two promotions, Ab Persijn leaves his position as trainer of vv Monnickendam’s flagship team.
  • 2022 / vv Monnickendam finishes in tenth place in Saturday League 1A, the best result in club history to date.
  • 2023 / Finishing bottom of the table in Saturday League 1A, vv Monnickendam drops back into League 2 along with HBOK and GC&FC Olympia.
