Timeline
  • 1921 / Foundation of a sports club in Urbino, a town in the Marches, Central Italy, which takes on the name Polisportiva Robur. Footballing activities may already have taken place under the wings of this omnisport club in the mid-1920s, but further details are not available regarding the matter.
  • 1927 / Foundation of a football club in Urbino, Associazione Sportiva (AS) Urbino, formed as a breakaway club of Polisportiva Robur. AC Urbino settles on a newly laid-out pitch, Campo Quattro Venti – only a stone’s throw away from the Raphael monument to the north of the historic inner-city of Urbino.
  • 1930 / According to one source, AS Urbino conquered its first provincial title in 1930, but further details are lacking.
  • 1933 / We find AS Urbino in the Second Division of the Marches’ regional league system – with the club gaining promotion to the First Division in one of the following six seasons. Also in 1933, the club is joined by goalkeeper Arnaldo Sentimenti, who hails from Emilia-Romagna.
  • 1934 / After one year with AS Urbino, goalkeeper Arnaldo Sentimenti earns himself a contract with AC Napoli, going on to have spells at AC Carpi, AP Napoli, and US Palermo, ultimately hanging up his boots in 1949. Sentimenti would pass away at the age of 83 in 1987.
  • 1943 / Champions in the Marches’ First Division Group A, 2 points ahead of runner-up Aviosportiva Jesi, AS Urbino qualifies for the promotion play-offs, only to withdraw voluntarily in favour of the aforementioned club. All footballing activities are suspended in the following two years (1943-45) as World War II draws to a close.
  • 1945 / As regular league football is resumed across Italy, AS Urbino is placed in Serie C, the third level of the countries’ football pyramid.
  • 1946 / Finishing in third-last place in Serie C Group B South, AS Urbino suffers relegation into the Marches’ First Division – only to be spared this fate due to extra places in Serie C turning out to be available following the withdrawal of other clubs.
  • 1947 / Finishing bottom of the table in Serie C Group B Central Italy, AS Urbino drops back into the regional divisions along with AC Sammaurese and SS Edera Ravenna. Being placed in the Marches’ First Division for the 1947-48 season, we lose trace of the club’s achievements in the following decade.
  • 1961 / AS Urbino wins promotion from the Marches’ Seconda Categoria Regionale to the Prima Categoria, i.e. the fifth tier of the Italian football pyramid – right below Serie D. Also in 1961 – or possibly in 1960 – the club abandons its Campo Quattro Venti, settling at the newly laid-out Stadio Comunale Montefeltro, only several dozens of yards down the road, on the northside of Urbino’s town centre.
  • 1965 / Champions in the Marches’ Prima Categoria Group A, 1 point ahead of closest rivals Ava Victoria, AS Urbino goes on to suffer defeat in a play-off match against Group B champions AS San Crispino, thus missing out on promotion to Serie D.
  • 1966 / Finishing in joint first place in the Marches’ Prima Categoria Group A with US Vigor Senigallia, AS Urbino meets its rivals in a tie-break match at Stadio Tonino Benelli in Pesaro, eventually winning the match – and thereby the title – after a penalty shoot-out (0-0 A.E.T.). Thus qualifying for the promotion play-offs, the club once more suffers defeat against the champions of Group B, this time SS Portorecanati (2-0), thus missing out on acceding to Serie D.
  • 1967 / Champions in the Marches’ Prima Categoria Group A, 1 point ahead of closest rivals SP Alma Juventus Fano, AS Urbino finally manages to win promotion to Serie D – the fourth and lowest tier of Italian football – by going on to defeat Group B winners Elpidiense Cascinare in a play-off. The successful coach is Oscar Castellini.
  • 1970 / Finishing in second-last place in Serie D Group D, AS Urbino drops back into the regional divisions, alongside US Vigor Senigallia and bottom club CA Faenza.

  • 2003 / Champions in Eccellenza Marche, 5 points ahead of runner-up SP Grottammare, AS Urbino wins promotion to Serie D, the fifth tier of Italian football; moreover, the club also manages to win the Marches’ Regional Cup (Coppa Italia Dilettanti Marche). In the summer of 2003, the club changes its name to become Urbino Calcio.

However, marred by financial difficulties, the club chooses to drop back one extra level, into Prima Categoria, the eighth tier of the Italian football pyramid.
  • 2012 / Finishing in sixteenth place in Prima Categoria Marche Group A, AS Urbino undergoes the humiliation of being retrograded into Seconda Categoria, the ninth level of Italian football. However, following the 2011-12 season, the club concludes a merger with ASD Pieve di Cagna Calcio, resulting in the foundation of Associazione Sportiva Dilettantistica (ASD) Urbino Pieve, with first team football being played in Urbino’s Stadio Montefeltro – and in Prima Categoria, the level of Pieve.
