BELGIUM: REFC Wegnez (1937-2016) / FC Entente Pepine (2021-)

Ruelle du Koreux, Wegnez (FC Entente Pepine, formerly R L'Etoile FC de Wegnez)

Belgium, province: Liège = Luik

31 X 2021 / FC Entente Pepine - R Spa FC Renouveau 4-0 / Liège, Provincial League 3D (= BE level 8)

Note 1: L'Etoile Football Club de Wegnez, founded in 1937 (matricule 2532), acquired the royal epithet in 1989, becoming REFC Wegnez. In 2016, the club merged with RUFC Concordia Pepinster, becoming FC Entente Pepine. Following the merger, all activities moved to Pepinster's ground at Rue Prévochamps, while the premises in Wegnez were left derelict. In 2019, American football club Les Mustangs Verviers-Pepinster took over the ground. Two years later, however, in the summer of 2021, a terrible flooding of the Vesdre and Hoegne rivers ravaged Pepinster, including FC Entente's ground down at Rue Prévochamps, where the synthetic pitch was washed away as well as most of the fencing around the pitch. With no quick solution being in sight - with much of the town in tatters, the reconstruction of the football ground is not a first priority -, the decision was taken to move the club's activities to Wegnez, up in the hills above Pepinster. How long Entente Pepine's groundshare with Les Mustangs in Wegnez will last - and if they will ever return to Rue Prévochamps - is as yet unclear.

Note 2: Below, a compilation of photos of two different visits: pictures 1-13 = non-matchday visit to abandoned ground, May 2018 / pictures 14-35 = match visit, October 2021.
